Academic and Professional Background

Prof. Dr. Selçuk Kılıç is a medical microbiologist and Professor at the University of Health Sciences, Gülhane Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medical Microbiology in Ankara, Türkiye.

He received his MD degree from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine and completed his specialization in Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology at the Refik Saydam National Public Health Agency (RSNPHA), Ankara.

Prior to joining the University of Health Sciences, Prof. Kılıç worked at RSNPHA, where he served in the Department of Communicable Diseases Research. Between 1999 and 2008, he worked as a Medical Microbiology specialist at the National Parasitology and Bacterial Zoonoses Reference and Research Laboratories. He was awarded the title of Associate Professor in Medical Microbiology in 2008.

 

Professional Experience

Between 2014 and 2020, Prof. Kılıç served as the Director of the National Microbiology Reference Laboratories and Biological Products (NMRLBP) within the Public Health General Directorate of the Ministry of Health of Türkiye (formerly RSNPHA).

During this period, he made significant contributions to diagnostic services, laboratory accreditation, education, and scientific research. He has led and participated in numerous national and international research projects supported by TÜBİTAK, the European Union Framework Programmes (FP6 & FP7), DTRA, CRDF, and various universities.

He has played a key role in the development, implementation, and management of projects related to the diagnosis, epidemiology, and surveillance of communicable diseases at both national and international levels.

In 2016, he was appointed as Professor and Head of the Department of Medical Microbiology at the University of Health Sciences.

Prof. Kılıç’s research interests include:

  • Diagnosis and molecular epidemiology of zoonotic diseases
  • Biotechnology and vaccine development
  • Sensor technologies
  • Medical defense against biological agents (CBRN)
  • Biosafety and biosecurity
  • Disaster medicine

 

Scientific Contributions and International Engagement

Prof. Kılıç has delivered numerous invited lectures and plenary talks at national and international scientific meetings. He has authored over 130 articles published in peer-reviewed international journals, as well as more than 60 publications in Turkish medical journals.

He serves on several national and international advisory boards, particularly in the field of zoonoses. He has represented Türkiye in various international organizations and platforms, including WHO, CDC, ECDC, and CBRN-related working groups.

Additionally, he has been a member of multiple Scientific Advisory Boards under the Ministry of Health and served on the Board of Directors of the Turkish Microbiology Society for three consecutive terms between 2014 and 2022.

Prof. Dr. Selçuk Kılıç is a leading medical microbiologist with extensive expertise in zoonotic diseases, biosafety, and biological threat preparedness. With a career spanning over two decades, he has played a pivotal role in strengthening Türkiye’s national capacity in infectious disease diagnostics, surveillance, and laboratory systems.

As Director of the National Microbiology Reference Laboratories and Biological Products (2014–2020), he led major institutional advancements in laboratory accreditation, diagnostic quality, and national surveillance infrastructure. His leadership significantly contributed to the modernization and integration of microbiology reference systems at the national level.

Prof. Kılıç has successfully led and contributed to numerous high-impact national and international research projects funded by TÜBİTAK, the European Union Framework Programmes (FP6 & FP7), DTRA, and CRDF. His work focuses on the molecular epidemiology of zoonotic pathogens, innovative diagnostic approaches, and the development of biotechnological solutions, including vaccine-related research and sensor technologies.

He is internationally recognized for his contributions to biosafety, biosecurity, and medical CBRN defense. Prof. Kılıç has actively represented Türkiye in global platforms, including WHO, CDC, ECDC, and international CBRN working groups, contributing to policy development and scientific collaboration in emerging infectious diseases and biological risk management.

With over 130 peer-reviewed international publications and more than 60 national articles, he has made substantial contributions to the scientific literature in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. He is a frequent invited speaker at international congresses and serves on multiple high-level scientific advisory boards.

His current work continues to bridge research, public health practice, and policy, with a focus on One Health approaches, emerging zoonoses, and global health security.
